3 killed in 40-vehicle pileup on I-96 in Fowlerville

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, Mich. — Authorities say three people have died and 11 others are hurt following a pileup on a snow-slickened Interstate 96 in the Fowlerville area.

Lt. Eric Sanborn of the Livingston County Sheriff Department confirmed the three deaths Thursday in the pileup involving about 40 vehicles.

FOX 2 Detroit reports that westbound I-96 is expected to reopen at 10 p.m.  The eastbound lanes were reopened at about 2 p.m.

Michigan State Police are blaming slippery conditions for the Thursday morning crash.

Several crashes were also reported across West Michigan Thursday as lake effect snow piled up.

Two people were hurt in Mecosta County when a woman in a car slid through the stop sign at the end of the ramp from US-131 ramp to Perry Street and struck an ambulance.  She and the ambulance driver were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

MDOT tweeted out video of this crash along I-96 near Plainfield where a pickup truck spun out into the median, but was snagged in the cable barrier.

In Ionia County, a vehicle was unable to stop on Storey Road near Belding Road and hit two vehicles.  One person suffered serious injuries and two others involved were not hurt.

Several crashes also have been reported on Detroit-area freeways.
