BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — Battle Creek police are asking for the public's help in catching the man who approached a little girl that was the suspected target of an attempted kidnapping over Mother's Day weekend.

"We like to think that it doesn’t happen," said BCPD Major Jim Grafton during an interview at the station. "Our kids are safe but you have to be constantly aware of your child’s whereabouts."

The incident happened Saturday night around 8pm when the 6-year-old was sitting on the curb in front of her home, police said. The man drove up and used food to lure the little girl into enter his vehicle. The mother, who was tending to another child inside the house, had an inkling to step outside. So, she did.

"When she came outside she observed a red Chevy Cavalier, 2-door, parked directly behind her daughter," said Major Grafton. "She observed a white male subject inside the car with sunglasses."

She immediately ran to him, police said, yelling at him to leave. He then drove away at a high rate of speed. The mother tried to chase after the car and noticed that it had no license plate. Shen then called 911 and explained everything that happened.

"Very thankful that mom was observant," said Major Grafton. "Her sense kicked in that something was wrong and went out there and disrupted whatever was trying to be done."
