2 shot, 1 of them dead near Hastings; suspect in custody

BALTIMORE TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A suspect is in custody after a woman was shot to death and a man suffered a gunshot wound early Sunday morning near Hastings.

Authorities are conducting a homicide investigation into the shootings. Deputies say investigators were been on scene at a home in the 6900 block of Bird Road since around 2 a.m. Sunday. According to a press release issued from the Barry County Sheriff's Office, they first responded to report of a male with a gunshot wound to the neck. His identity has not been released.

Sheriff Dar Leaf told FOX 17 that there are two shooting victims -- a woman who was pronounced dead at the scene and a man who was still alive.

On Sunday evening, police identified Cheyenne Bowling, 26, of Woodland as the person who died in the incident.

Leaf said he believes only two shots were fired during the incident, which Leaf termed a "domestic-type situation" that occurred at 1:55 a.m. Sunday.

Police say deputies and fire crews were called to a structure fire on Coats Road around 4:45 a.m. They believe the two incidents are connected.

The suspect left the scene and was being sought as armed and dangerous before he was taken into custody by deputies shortly after 10 a.m. Sunday.Police have not released his identity at this time.

The investigation is being handled by the Barry County Sheriff's Department.
