HOLLAND, Mich. -- Authorities say one person was killed Tuesday after being trapped by a partial ceiling collapse at the Holland Civic Center.

The Holland Department of Public Safety says emergency crews responded at 3:13 p.m. to the building at 150 W. 8th St.

Police say one person died and another person near the collapse was seriously injured.  Their identities were not released, but authorities say both were working for a sub-contracting company involved with renovations at the Civic Center.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the dedicated workers and their families," said Holland Mayor Nancy De Boer in a release.  "There are no words to express the depth of their loss and the emptiness in their hearts."

According to a release, the ceiling collapse happened near the center's east doors.

The Civic Center was closed to the public while it undergoes renovations.  It was scheduled to open in October 2018.
