GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Grand Rapids Police were able to de-escalate a situation with a suicidal person Friday morning.

Police were flagged down by a woman in the 800 block of 11th Street NW saying that her 19-year-old son was threatening to kill himself.  An earlier call to police indicated that a person was holding a child at knifepoint.

Police were able to talk with the man, who, according to police, was asking for officers to shoot him.  At one point the man moved towards the officers with the knife, but police were able to get him to drop the knife.

The man has been taken to the hospital for evaluation.
