Police arrest armed suspect following Holland standoff

HOLLAND, Mich. — Police in Holland say an armed suspect who kept them surrounding a home for several hours Sunday morning has been arrested.

At 2:17 a.m. Sunday, Holland Police Department officers were dispatched to a report of a domestic assault involving a shotgun by a house in the 300 block of Central Avenue.  Officers interviewed the victim and a witness who both live in the same residence as the suspect.  Officers were informed that the suspect threatened the victim with the shotgun and was currently inside the house.

Officers did see the suspect with the shotgun and made verbal contact with him to at attempt to obtain cooperation. However, the suspect refused to cooperate.

The Holland Police Special Enforcement Team was called out to assist along with Holland Police canine units.  After approximately a 4 1/2 hour standoff, the Special Enforcement Team was successful in gaining compliance, convinced the suspect to come out and took the suspect into custody.

The 40-year-old Holland resident was lodged in jail on a charge of felonious domestic assault and a search of the residence resulted in long guns being taken as evidence.

This case remains under investigation, and the suspect will likely be arraigned in court on Monday.
