BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — The American Red Cross has been called in to help people whose apartments were damaged during an early morning fire at the Rivers Apartment Complex on Stringham Road in Battle Creek.

Dispatch tells FOX 17 the call about the fire came in around 5:30 a.m. Thursday.

Fire officials say that several people needed assistance to get out of the building. One person was injured after jumping from a balcony to escape the fire.  One first responder suffered a hand injury after a fall.

The Battle Creek Fire Department says that all 24 units in the building are currently uninhabitable and residents are being relocated into other vacant apartments in the complex.  12 of the 24 units may be able to be re-occupied later today or Friday.  Fire crews were able to keep the fire contained to three units and the attic area.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
