BROOKS TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Emergency crews say a 250-acre wildfire in Newaygo County has been contained, however, efforts to fight the flames will continue through the night.

Newaygo County Emergency Services says in a release the fire is on the west side of Bills Lake near M-82.

Tim Webb with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) tells FOX 17 that the fire started in a meadow in the area at about 6 p.m. Tuesday. Most of the fire is south of M-82, but some of it spread north of the highway.

Emergency officials say people who live in the area should be prepared to evacuate. So far two homes south of M-82 have been evacuated, and 15 other structures are threatened by the fire.  Webb says that no structures have been lost in the fire as of 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The fire was initially reported as covering 82 acres but had spread to cover 250 acres.  Eleven volunteer fire departments responded as well as the U.S. Forest Service and the DNR. Crews told FOX 17 shortly before midnight that the flames were contained.

M-82 between Spruce and Elm Avenues has re-opened.
