KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. — The driver involved in a rollover crash Sunday has passed away from his injuries and the child inside the car with him at the time suffered a concussion.

It happened around 1:45 p.m. Sunday on U.S. 131 near the 46 mile marker in Alamo Township.

Witnesses say the driver, identified as Derick Allen Smith, 29,  was driving erratically, speeding, swerving in and out of traffic and passing vehicles on both shoulders of the roadway before the crash.

His car ended up leaving the roadway, landing in a ditch and rolling several times. Smith was ejected from the car while his front seat passenger, only identified as a 9-year-old, had to be pulled from the vehicle by passerby.

We’re told the driver’s blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit. Police also say the driver was not wearing a seat belt while the front seat passenger was wearing a seat belt.
