HAMLIN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say a 14-year-old North Carolina boy has died while trying to swim across a mid-Michigan pond.

The Eaton County, Michigan, sheriff’s office says Keagon Rouser of Lewisville was swimming Thursday night at a pond on private property in Hamlin Township when he went underwater and didn’t resurface. The sheriff’s office says a family member who was at the pond with him called 911.

Several family members tried unsuccessfully to find the boy in the pond, which was filled with weeds. His body was recovered by divers after about three hours of searching.

The sheriff’s office says he was visiting family in Michigan.
