Strong winds topple tree, destroy Oceana County family’s garage

OCEANA COUNTY, Mich. -- Storms that moved into Oceana County early Thursday morning are being blamed for damage to at least one family's home.

Homeowner Ed Thurkettle, who lives in the 6000 block of W. Shelby Road in Shelby, says he woke up to the sound of train coming through their neighborhood.

When he and his wife went outside around 2 a.m. Thursday, they found the roof torn off their garage after a tree fell on it.

According to the National Weather Service, a strong thunderstorm was reported just after 2 a.m. bringing 50 to 55 mph wind gusts, strong enough to knock down trees.

The storm knocked out power to a handful of residents just west of U.S. 31. Consumer's Energy says it plans to have power restored in the affected area no later than 7 a.m.
