WESTLAND, Mich. (AP) — Local officials across Michigan are being asked to produce ballots from the 2016 election.
Someone named Emily has been making requests on behalf of United Action Group, which lists a post office box in New York. The requests are being treated like public records requests and would likely carry a hefty fee.
Westland City Clerk Richard LeBlanc says his staff is working on a response. He says some clerks have received deposits to begin the work.
Sally Williams, director of elections for the Secretary of State’s Office, says she has “no idea who Emily is.”
Williams says ballots are supposed to be kept for 22 months after an election, a time period that expires in September. Ballots don’t have a voter’s name.
A Michigan elections expert, Mark Grebner, says getting copies of ballots could cost millions of dollars.
