STURGIS, Mich. - The mother of three children taken in an abduction is talking about the family's ordeal.
Adriana Lopez tells FOX 17 that she is happy the situation has resolved and is thankful for everyone who helped find her children.
Fernando Cruz, the father of the children, took them from their mother at about 10:00 p.m. Wednesday night. He had made comments that he was intending to harm himself and the children. Police issued an AMBER Alert at about 2:00 a.m. Thursday.
Lopez details abuse at the hands of Cruz in a personal protection order filed in June of this year. In it, she claims he forced her to have sex with him, called her names and was physically abusive.
Police initially responded to a domestic violence call Wednesday evening. Police say Lopez called from a nearby gas station. Officers went to the house on Pioneer Street where Cruz was with the children and Cruz drove away. Police began chasing Cruz, crossing the Indiana border.
They say Cruz was driving close to 100 miles an hour. After learning the kids were in the car, police say they stopped the chase and lost track of Cruz.
Police say they issued an AMBER Alert after that, when Cruz made threats to hurt himself and the children. They attempted to locate Cruz by pinging his cellphone with no luck. Thursday morning, police were informed that Cruz's black Chevy Traverse was back at the home on Pioneer Street. Police surrounded the home and were able to make contact with Cruz, who was taken into custody without issue.
All three of the children are safe. Police say the children and Lopez are staying at a neutral location and are safe.
Cruz is expected to be arraigned Friday in Centerville.
