MACKINAW CITY, Mich. (AP) — Opponents of twin oil pipelines in a sensitive Great Lakes waterway are planning a day of protests Saturday.
Kayaks, canoes and other watercraft will join a demonstration Saturday in the Straits of Mackinac, where a segment of Enbridge Inc.’s Line 5 runs beneath the channel linking Lakes Huron and Michigan.
A “Water is Life” festival begins at noon at Conklin Heritage Park in Mackinaw City.
A related “Pipe Out Paddle Protest” is scheduled for Traverse City, where watercraft will float down the Boardman River and into Grand Traverse Bay.
Line 5 carries nearly 23 million gallons of oil daily between Superior, Wisconsin, and Sarnia, Ontario. A nearly 5-mile-long segment crosses the straits.
Enbridge says the 65-year-old segment is in good condition, but critics contend it is dangerous and should be removed.
