DETROIT (AP) — A Detroit officer fatally shot a man early Friday during a raid connected with the investigation into the shooting death of a 5-year-old girl just hours earlier, police said.

Sgt. Nicole Kirkwood said officers entered a home on the city’s west side and found a man with a gun. The man “raised a weapon and the officers fired shots,” Kirkwood said.

The Detroit News reported that relatives of the man, whose name hasn’t been released, said he had nothing to do with the girl’s killing. McKayla Coleman, 19, told the newspaper she was asleep upstairs when police “busted in the house” and shot the man.

“All I heard was a big boom,” she said.

Officer Dan Donakowski said he didn’t know if the man who was killed was wanted by police in the girl’s death.

“That portion is under investigation,” he said.

The second shooting occurred about 2 miles from a home where police said the girl was killed and her mother wounded late Thursday. The girl was pronounced dead at a hospital and her mother was in serious condition, Detroit police Commander Elaine Bryant said.

“This is tragic,” Bryant said. “The child is an innocent victim and we don’t know why this child was targeted in this manner.”

Bryant said at least one person entered the home before opening fire. She said “a couple of” other people who were in the home at the time were not injured.

Bryant appealed for anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
