Pharrell Williams threatens to sue Trump over use of ‘Happy’ at rally after Pittsburgh shooting

Pharrell Williams isn’t too happy with President Donald Trump.

In a cease and desist letter sent Monday, Williams’ attorney Howard King called on the President to stop playing the hitmaker’s song “Happy” during events. The song was played at a rally over the weekend just hours after a gunman killed 11 people at a Pittsburgh synagogue.

“On the day of the mass murder of 11 human beings at the hands of a deranged ‘nationalist,’ you played his song ‘Happy’ to a crowd at a political event in Indiana,” King wrote in the letter. “There was nothing ‘happy’ about the tragedy inflicted upon our country on Saturday and no permission was granted for your use of this song for this purpose.”

King claims the use of “Happy” without consent constitutes both copyright and trademark infringement.

“Pharrell has not, and will not, grant you permission to publicly perform or otherwise broadcast or disseminate any of his music,” King wrote.

This is not the first time Trump has received flak from angry musicians after using their music without permission. The Rolling Stones, The O’Jays, Adele, Queen and several others have asked Trump to stop using their music as well.

Obtaining permission to use copyrighted music at a public event is either a standard procedure or unnecessary. So is it the latter, or have artists let politicians get away without going through proper channels for a long time, and now they’re finally getting picky about it? If that’s the case, I hope they’re equally picky about politicians they agree with using their material.

On a somewhat unrelated note, I wonder how long it will be before some on the left manage to tie Trump’s existence to the rise of Hitler and Pol Pot, the Great Depression, the Irish Potato Famine and the Great Plague.

Artists have been doing it for a long time.

With the Buffoon’s rise it could be all of those-depending on when his economic policies or lack thereof start to come to fruition.

I’m just glad I can look at my children and grandchildren and tell them I never voted for a demagogue.

At least we’ve already got several years’ history of a lying president under our belt to help prepare us for now and the future. Early in Obama’s first term I started to use the phrase, “I believe everything he does,” because you couldn’t believe anything he said.

Nah Obama could spin the news with the best politicians.

Trump is on par with Lucifer for king of lies title! I think we’re up to several thousand since he was sworn in. Glad i can say I didn’t vote for him!
