GRAND HAVEN, Mich.  —  The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office says a 3-year-old child from Muskegon was struck by a vehicle Wednesday night in Grand Haven.

Investigators say around 7:30 p.m., the boy was trick-or-treating with his 7-year-old brother. Both were sitting in the backseat of the family’s van with their legs hanging out of the sliding doors. They were driving house-to-house in the Hofma Park Subdivision.

Officials say the toddler either jumped or fell out of the vehicle. Then, neighbors started yelling. Police say the child’s father – a 36-year-old Muskegon man – was driving a Dodge Caravan. When the father heard the screams, he hit the brakes and backed up over the child, then went forward, hitting him again, according to police.  The father later told investigators the vehicle was going approximately 3 miles per hour at the time.

FOX 17 spoke to one witness who says the family had just finished trick-or-treating at their home prior to the incident.

The child was taken to the Hackley Hospital with injuries to his legs and police say he expected to survive.

They have not released the names of those involved.
