BIG PRAIRIE TOWNSHIP, Mich.  — The Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office says a two-year-old girl was killed and four others taken to a hospital as the result of a two-car crash in Big Prairie Township

It happened around 1:37 p.m. Saturday and closed the intersection of E. Baseline Road and S. Elm Avenue for a few hours.

According to a Sheriff’s Office news release, “Upon arrival on-scene, deputies found that a pickup truck, being driven southbound on Elm Ave., had not stopped at the intersection of Baseline Road. The pickup truck struck an SUV heading eastbound on Baseline Road.”

Police say the 18-year-old driver of the pickup truck and his 14-year-old male passenger were not injured in the crash. Both are from Morley.

However, the driver of the SUV – a 27-year-old woman from New Era – and her two passengers were taken by ambulance to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital. Police say they are a 29-year-old man and a seven-year-old girl, both from Shelby.

The Sheriff’s Office says a five-year-old boy from Shelby was airlifted to the same hospital. And a 2-year-old girl from Shelby was pronounced dead at the scene.

No names had been released as of Saturday evening.

The Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office says alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been a factor in the accident.

Assisting Sheriff’s deputies at the scene were members of the White Cloud Police Department, Michigan State Police, Big Prairie and White Cloud fire departments, Life EMS and Mecosta EMS.
