Police: no active shooter on University of Michigan campus

Our Detroit affiliate, FOX-2 TV, Twitter post.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Reports of a possible active shooter on the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor prompted campus police to issue an emergency alert late Saturday afternoon.

But it turned out to be a false alarm. An official all-clear was given at 7:50 pm Saturday by the university: “Police have determined there is no threat to the community. Buildings are open. All clear.”

About a half-hour after the initial public alert around 5 p.m. Saturday about a possible active shooter on campus, university police tweeted, “There does not appear to be an active threat to the community. DPSS continues to investigate. Continue to stay clear of area.”

The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office posted on Twitter at 5:37 p.m.: “There does not appear to be an active threat at UofM at this time. Reports of shots fired on campus are unfounded at this time. UofM DPSS continues to investigate and asks that you stay clear of the area.”

At 5:54pm, Ann Arbor Police confirmed there was no active-shooter threat.

Earlier, shortly before 5 p.m., the Division of Public Safety & Security had posted on its website: “Mason Hall Run Hide Fight.”

Several media outlets cited unconfirmed reports of balloons popping as the possible cause of the Amber alert for students.

It was girls popping balloons in the dorms and screaming out of the window, has anyone been wounded? Clearly there is no shooter. Lol.
