MDHHS reports new case of measles related to U of M visit

LANSING, Mich. (FOX 17/AP) — A new case of measles related to international travel has prompted the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services and the Washtenaw County Health Department to alert the public to potential exposure at several locations.

MDHHS says the new case is not connected to the current outbreak that has resulted in 39 confirmed cases, so far. It was someone who visited the University of Michigan Intramural Sports Building in Ann Arbor earlier this month. The specific locations are itemized at the end of this report.

Earlier today, health officials reduced their count of Michigan’s measles cases from 41 to 39, after additional testing determined two of the reported cases weren’t the highly contagious disease .The two cases included a child in Washtenaw County that was reported as the first case in that county, as well as a child in Oakland County.

The department says they’d both been recently vaccinated and had symptoms and initial test results that classified them as measles cases.

Health officials still are urging people to get vaccinated if they haven’t received the vaccine in the past. The number of measles cases in Michigan is the highest since 65 in 1991. More information about the state’s measles outbreak can be found online.
