FREE SOIL TOWNSHIP, Mich. – One person is dead and another was wounded in a shooting in Mason County Tuesday morning.

The Mason County Sheriff says they were called to the 10000 block of N. US-31 just before 7:00 a.m. by one of the victims.  That person told dispatchers that the shooter, a man, was in the home, and that there was a second victim.  That person also told dispatchers that there were children in the home.

The suspect barricaded himself in a room and responding deputies and SWAT units were able to get two children and the caller out of the home safely. The suspect surrendered without incident at about 8:25 a.m.

Deputies found one person inside the home who had been shot to death. The caller, who was also shot, was taken to Munson Hospital in Manistee with non-life threatening injuries.

The case is still under investigation and the Michigan State Police Crime Lab from Grayling, Michigan is processing the scene.
