GRAND RAPIDS, MI. – Maybe this time will be the last for a while?

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Ottawa, Kent, and Ionia Counties southward through 8 A.M. Sunday. Two to five inches of slushy snow is likely along/south of the I-94 corridor with an inch or less along/north of I-96.

The snow (that will be mixed with rain at first) Saturday afternoon in our southwestern counties — such as Berrien and Van Buren — and then spread to the north and east. The snow will reach peak intensity during the evening hours on Saturday, with the RPM model forecasting the heaviest snow along the I-94 corridor.

We look at several different forecast models to determine how much snow will fall across the area. The European model looks like this in terms of total forecast snowfall:

Although forecast amounts in our southern counties look a bit high, it does have the right idea in pushing the heaviest totals to the south. This is how much we are forecasting at the present time:

Although our confidence in the above snowfall forecast map is fairly high at this point, late season snowfall can be very fickle and the warmer ground will also play a role in total accumulation. We believe the snow will come down hard enough to overcome that warmer ground and accumulate especially across our southern counties.

In the meantime, the sun will be out in nearly full force on Sunday. This factor along with highs in the low/middle 50s in most areas will assure most of the snow will melt during the afternoon.
