Mother: 7th grade son had to undergo surgery after being bullied

MUSKEGON, Mich. — A Muskegon parent says her son was bullied so badly that he had to undergo surgery after the incident.

Seventh grader Kadin Meinders Morris recently underwent surgery to fix his broken nose. Meinders Morris says a fellow student came up to him and head-butted him in the hallway.

"At first I didn't feel anything until I heard something crack and then I feel nothing," said Morris. "Then there is blood all over the place."

On top of the surgery Meinders Morris has already undergone,  doctors told the family the 7th grader will need reconstructive surgery within the next 12 months.

"He can't really do anything because he has to watch his face," said his mother, Laurie Smeltz. "So now I have to clean out his nose three times a day, and it hurts. It's painful. He's in pain all day long."

The incident occurred April 30 at Oakridge Middle School. The Muskegon County Prosecutor's Office says the alleged assault was recorded on the school's surveillance system.

Charges have been filed against the boy accused of head-butting Meinders Morris. The prosecutor's office confirmed the student is facing aggravated assault charges. He is not being identified because he is under the age of 18 and being charged in juvenile court.

According to court records, the same boy was charged last year in 2018 for aggravated battery. The boy's mother, who spoke to FOX 17 over the phone but refused an on-camera interview, said the charges were dismissed because he was found 'not fit' to stand trial after undergoing a competency evaluation.

The boy's mother also stated she believes her son should be reprimanded in some way for his actions.

Oakridge Public Schools has been working with local law enforcement since the incident occurred. Superintendent Tom Livezey provided the following statement:

"At Oakridge Schools, we care deeply about our students. We do not tolerate unsafe behavior, and we work closely with police in unique cases when students are threatened or hurt. Student privacy policies prevent us from releasing any further information."

Parents accept too much BS at schools including the daily threat of school shooters. The government started schools but there are so many online and home school schooling options now. If parents kept their kids home temporarily in great numbers Congress would be forced to address gun violence at schools immediately as the loss of students would dramatically effect the economy.. the only thing they care about is MONEY. Keep em home and safe to make changes. PARENTS have the power. Teachers strike all the time.

No child should have to worry about being violently assaulted at school … I hope they seek financial damages as well! God bless your family! Stay strong kid …this is only temporary.

Hit the idiot child’s mother in the wallet. If she’s broke or on welfare take her car or flatscreen tv. This crap begins at home.

Sounds like the “bully” is a felon in the making. Since he has already committed assaults with little or no action(s) taken against him/her, this will continue until either he/she picks on the wrong person and gets the snot beat out of him/her or ends up killing someone and spends the rest of their life in prison.

We don’t have a gun problem, we have a people problem. Just let your kids continue to be desensitized playing the extremely violent video games, let them keep watching violent garbage on tv and listening to garbage for music and then wonder why they are violent, guns don’t fly around shooting people without a violent idiot behind the trigger.

Another white boy was just attacked (less than 30 minutes ago) by student at Martin Luther King elementary while 8 teachers stood by and watched and then want the mother of the victim arrested for pulling the attacker off her child and holding him for the police.
