Our severe weather threat has diminished this evening

WEST MICHIGAN — A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was is in effect for Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Cass, Kalamazoo, Kent, Muskegon, Ottawa, St. Joseph and Van Buren counties until 10 p.m…but was cancelled early.

A first round of storms arrived on the lakeshore in West Michigan around 5:30 p.m., mainly bringing winds of around 30 to 35 miles per hour. The strongest storms, which triggered a few severe thunderstorm warnings, were located across our extreme southern counties of Berrien, Cass, and St. Joseph. Some of these storms had the potential of some 50 to 60 mph wind gusts.

Some storms made their way through Kent County around 6:30 p.m., and county dispatchers confirmed to FOX-17 a tree was down and blocking N. Ball Creek , between Sparta Avenue and S. Main Street. That’s in Kent City. There was no early indication whether the tree had been struck by lightning, or if the brisk winds brought it down.

Sunshine followed the initial storms, in some areas, producing rainbows. See gallery below.

Stay with FOX 17 on-air and online for updates.
