One killed in pair of shootings following Grand Rapids fireworks

GRPD investigates a shooting report in a parking lot along Pearl Street on July 6, 2019 in Grand Rapids, Mich.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. —  A 21-year-old man is dead following a pair of shootings in Grand Rapids Saturday night.

Police say they responded to two shootings during the annual fireworks show.

The first shooting happened shortly after 10:30 p.m. in the area of Pearl Street and Summer Avenue NW.  According to a press release, officers were monitoring a large crowd when they heard multiple gunshots.

A 17-year-old male was taken to the hospital with injuries that weren’t life-threatening. Police say a 19-year-old male was also hospitalized. However, his current condition is not known.

About 10 minutes after that shooting,  officials received multiple 911 calls regarding a shooting near 6th Street and Front Avenue NW. When officers arrived on that scene, they found a 21-year-old male and a female victim.

Police say the man died from his wounds. The female victim was taken to the hospital for surgery.

Grand Rapids police say both shootings happened outside the event boundaries for the fireworks show, and add they were able to respond quickly because of the added presence in the area for the occasion.

Anyone with information on the shootings is asked to call Grand Rapids police at 616-456-3400 or Silent Observer at 616-774-2345.

Come one, come all to the fireworks in 2020 in downtown Grand Rapids. Be prepared to leave all belonging at home and you will be required to walk through metal detectors. Better yet, next year no firework exhibition is necessary with all the bad behavior walking around the downtown area.

Thank you mayor Bliss, you’ve achieved “diversity” and turned Grand Rapids into “Little Chicago”.To complete the transition from once, “All American Town”,to “Thug City”,I highly recommend that Mark Washington hire Eric Payne. This will follow the trend of other cities like Chicago,Baltimore,Atlanta,Detroit etc that hired black police chiefs and saw an explosion in gang crimes thereafter.I have full confidence that Washington will make the correct choice to ensure our demise as a city.

I am livid about this. Our city used to be safe. I have watched the police maligned by the increasingly incompent city “leaders” while crime has increased. These idiots need to be run out of town and replaced with individuals with common sense who see it as their duty to keep the citizens of our city safe.

White person kills her kids in a murder-suicide; no derogatory comments, only thoughts and prayers.

White person embezzles hundreds of thousands of dollars and gets probation; no derogatory comments.

Several sick, sadistic white men (in recent years) dismemembers people; no derogatory comments.

White person murders their neighbors/wife/selves over something trivial, such as fireworks or having snow blown onto their easement; no derogatory comments.

White person etc etc blah blah; no derogatory comments, only thoughts and prayers for the victims.

AND THEN: without having ANY facts about the case or a description of a suspect, (typical) Fox readers/viewers are quick to rush to judgement, denigrate a whole race of people, patronize anyone that’s not a trump-supporting/Stark white (right) wing nut job.

All of you West Michigan keyboard warriors are a joke, because when it comes to you and yours (ie pathological, narcissistic lying conman Trump/ mass shooters/ psychopaths of your own race/political affiliation), you have NOTHING to say. But God forbid it’s a POC or a progressive Democrat that you can blame it on. You people are seriously insane, hiding behind your “Christian” beliefs… When it fits you. Otherwise, you cast judgment when it’s convenient for you.

And then you wonder why your kids/family/friends/coworkers basically shun you; your beliefs are flawed and the things you’re emboldened to say by the Tweeter-In-Chief alienates anyone that’s not in your delusional echo-chamber.

You may have individual whites who commit a few headline grabbing crimes, but they are so far and few between, that the scarcity in the amount of those crimes,is what makes them headlines.Meanwhile,no matter what city(pick one–Chicago,Baltimore,St.Louis,Philly,Detroit–with Grand Rapids catching up quickly)that has a large group of blacks populating that city–they will,on a daily, weekly, monthly basis– consistently get what we’ve seen here in recent weeks. If you’re white, get your head out of the sand,ASAP.

This is what happens when you don’t allow the police to do their job. Is it possible that in years past, a crowd like that would have been broken up before things escalated? Was the 2nd shooting retaliation? Isn’t it interesting how after years of anti police rhetoric we are now seeing our city descend into a violence spiral?

When the city, under the mayor’s leadership, allows some people to ‘live their lifestyle’ at any hour 24/7 and perhaps fine those that might complain to the police, is it any wonder that the troublemakers will run amok? Sucking up to a few at the expense of many…that’s the liberal mantra.

Police are saying,”this violence will not be tolerated. This is not acceptable.”
–YES ,it IS tolerated and unless you physically remove large groups of section 8 tenants(many of whom have long rap sheets)from the area, you are saying,”It’s okay, this IS acceptable.”I’m not blaming the police one iota, their hands are tied,it’s all because of our poltician’s actions the last few years, this is happening–and with more low income housing approved–en masse–it will only get many times worse.Thank you mayor Bliss and Heartwell.
