GRANDVILLE, Mich. — Police say the large presence outside a Grandville home Wednesday was part of the investigation of a fatal stabbing.

Multiple law enforcement agencies surrounded the home while they waited for a search warrant and tried to contact a person of interest who was believed to be inside. Investigators determined that person wasn’t there Wednesday evening and began searching the home.

Grandville Police Chief Dan Steere  says nearby schools were notified about the active scene and students walking home were diverted from the area.

“We had something going on out here to hold some of the kids. So the buses didn’t come through here and the kids didn’t walk through here. They were all notified and given plenty of notice,” he said.

One person was killed and another seriously injured in the stabbing that happened around 10:22 p.m. on Porter Street near Meyer and Camden Avenues Tuesday. One of them was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Police said there was an argument in the front yard of a home between two people. The suspect stabbed a 37-year-old man from Grand Rapids who later died from his injuries. A second person who intervened was also stabbed and seriously hurt.

Police wouldn’t say Wednesday whether or not they had taken anyone into custody as a suspect in the stabbing, only that the scene was related to the ongoing investigation.
