Basement catches fire at home in Sparta

SPARTA TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A fire broke out in the basement of a home on Nash Street early Saturday morning.

The fire chief in Sparta told FOX 17 crews that the flames spread to a back room around 5 a.m. before firefighters were able to put them out.

No one was injured and rescuers even managed to save the family's pet turtle.

It is not yet clear how bad the damage to the home is.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

    I wonder if there was an electronic utility meter (smart meter) in the basement. They are notorious for sparking fires.
