Kara James is an Emmy-nominated meteorologist who has lived and worked in several different areas of the United States. She is excited to be coming back to her Midwest roots!
Although Kara was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania she grew up in Indiana, experiencing thunderstorms, tornadoes and winter weather first-hand. A nighttime tornado in1994 that damaged her elementary school and the surrounding neighborhoods sparked her interest in meteorology. After that, she watched The Weather Channel daily, read every book about hurricanes and tornadoes she could get her hands on, and knew she wanted to be a meteorologist when she "grew up"! Kara's passion for weather continued through her high school years, when she moved with her family to the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia.
After high school Kara attended the University of Oklahoma, in the heart of Tornado Alley, to study meteorology. While at Oklahoma, she went storm chasing and saw her first tornado in the field. Kara graduated cum laude from Oklahoma, and then went on to earn a Master's degree in Geosciences at Mississippi State University.
Kara's career has taken her from Tupelo, Mississippi to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Jackson, Mississippi and to Denver, Colorado covering national weather. Her specialty is severe weather forecasting and radar analysis. She earned the American Meteorological Society's Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) designation in 2013 and is a member of the AMS Board on Broadcast Meteorology.
Kara is looking forward to experiencing Michigan's lake effect snow and fantastic summer and fall seasons. When not at work, Kara enjoys traveling, being active, hiking, and exploring the area with her dogs and fiance.
