A new bill in the Michigan Senate proposes bringing back Michigan's classic blue license plate that went away in 2007.
Senate Bill 1146, introduced by Sen. Mallory McMorrow, a Democrat from Royal Oak, would give drivers the option to have a blue plate.
Also, drivers could get a black plate that was issued from 1979 to 1983.
“Any Michigander who grew up here in the 80s and 90s remembers the simple, iconic design, and knows bringing back the blue plate is a no-brainer,” McMorrow said in a release.
Drivers would have to pay an additional fee of $100 to get the blue plate with their registration. That money would go to the state's transportation fund.
McMorrow said a similar bill was introduced in California to bring back a 1960s-style plate, and more than 100,000 plates are registered each year.
“Classic plate designs give Michiganders the ability to celebrate our unparalleled car culture,” McMorrow said. “Bringing back the blue plate offers a creative way to generate much-needed revenue to help fix the roads without raising taxes.”
