DETROIT — To help in the fight against the growing coronavirus pandemic, Ford will be manufacturing respirators at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant, the UAW said in a Facebook post Tuesday .

A spokeswoman for the automotive company confirmed that Ford will be manufacturing medical equipment in the fight against COVID-19.

"Ford is humbled to work with 3M, GE Healthcare and the UAW to manufacture medical equipment to help those on the front lines fighting COVID-19," Kelli Felker with Ford Communications said in a statement. "We’ll have more to share about this in the future."

UAW Local 3000 posted to Facebook a call out for members who would like to participate in the manufacturing of the medical equipment.

"FRAP has been chosen to be a site that will be building respirators to help with the Covid-19 pandemic," the post reads. "FRAP members will be receiving a robo call around 5pm this evening asking for volunteers to work while the plant is down and have 24 hrs to respond."

The post adds that work will be performed at the Roush Building, and production will likely start between April 4 and 10.
