LANSING, Mich. — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said today she has approved a temporary layoff of certain employees across state government.
At a coronavirus news conference, Whitmer said the action is necessary for the state to ensure it can provide essential services as it deals with "serious budget implications" tied to the virus.
Whitmer didn't state how many employees or which departments are affected by the move.
The layoff will last 10 work days.
The affected workers will retain their health insurance and other benefits.
They'll also be automatically enrolled in unemployment.
Whitmer added that they won't "jump the queue."
