The Detroit Public Schools Community District and the Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT) have agreed Friday on the district's plan to reopen schools for the 2020-2021 academic year.
Union members will be allowed to choose their preference of either teaching in-person or remotely. This will be in effect for at least the first nine weeks of school.
The district will also provide COVID-19 testing to staff and students on a voluntary basis.
At the request of the teachers union, representatives from the DFT and district will conduct joint school walkthroughs to make sure buildings and classrooms are compliant with the health and safety requirements indicated in the district's reopening plan.
The health and safety requirements will be maintained through the 2020-21 school year unless stricter requirements are required by an increase in risks from the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the letter of agreement.
Some health and safety measures include keeping staff and students seated at least 6 feet apart with no more than 20 students per in-person class.
Virtual and online classes will have class size limits as well.
