KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. — As the leaves change colors, and the weather is quickly getting colder by day, many children in Kalamazoo County are without the proper clothing attire to keep them warm.

The Salvation Army said for every adult coat distributed, there is a need for three or four children’s coats.

"This year is no different than any other year. In fact, it may be a little bit worse in terms of the general public. A lot of people have lost their jobs due to COVID, and a lot of those jobs are not coming back," said the Salvation Army Development Director Tim Summers.

As we approach the colder months, many children and families in Kalamazoo County are in need of the proper winter attire.

"While you’re getting ready for fall and winter and you’re moving your things around in your closet that you know you won’t wear, or that your kids are not going to wear this year, donate them and help a great cause," said the President and Owner of Jeannie Cleaning Jeannie Henderson.

Just last year, over 1300 coats were distributed to those in need throughout the county, according to the Salvation Army.

This year, they said due to COVID-19, they're expecting the need to be even higher.

"Typically we are going to give out over 1000 coats. The numbers of families varies. Some families only need one, some families need 5, 6 or 7 coats depending on the size of their family," said Summers.

Throughout the entire month of October, Jeannie Cleaning along with over 25 other businesses throughout the county are acting as collection points for the winter wear.

"We are looking for hats, gloves, and mittens, snow pants, boots, scarves, hats and anything outwear wise for kids but also adults as well," said Henderson.

In early November, the Salvation Army will distribute those items to families in need.

"It’s cold in Michigan so we need to help people stay warm," said Henderson.

If you'd like to donate, Jeannie Cleaning and over 25 other businesses will be accepting new and gently used coats and other winter wear donations throughout the entire month of October.

The Salvation Army is also accepting monetary donations.
