79 animals seized in Dowagiac hoarding situation

DOWAGIAC, Mich. — Dowagiac police found dozens of animals in poor condition in a home Thursday morning, according to a news release.

Officers had received complaints about the home in the 100 block of Lester Street.

When they executed a search warrant about 9:30 a.m. Thursday, they found 79 animals, including the following:

  • 48 rabbits
  • 10 dogs
  • 8 cats
  • 5 quails
  • 4 guinea pigs
  • 2 love birds
  • 1 turtle
  • 1 chicken

All the animals were seized and taken to animal control.
They appeared to have been fed.

The owner of the home is a 37-year-old man from Dowagiac.

The Cass County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case and determine any charges.
