BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. — The Berrien County Jail is being sued after a female inmate was raped and corrections officers allegedly failed to do anything about it.
Former inmate Wendy Cockrun says she was housed in 2019 with Hebony Brooks in, who reportedly had a history of assaulting fellow inmates at the Berrien County Jail.
Court documents state Cockrun was assaulted at least five times by Brooks in Spring 2019 and informed corrections officers multiple times about what was happening.
Corrections officers Celena Herbert, Hannah Nofs, Miranda Bailey, Kevin Holt, Abigail Pifer, Sabrina Laratta, Kristina Henderson, Brittany Zabel, Andrea Leneway, Kristina Burks and Carol Vaughn are listed as defendants, along with the County of Berrien.
