CASS COUNTY, Mich. — Police are investigating a fatal crash involving one vehicle that occurred in Cass County this afternoon.
The crash happened west of Birch Road on US-12, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.
We’re told Douglas Vankirk, 63, from Mishawaka, Indiana, was driving east on US-12 when he lost control and collided into a number of trees after driving off the road.
Police say emergency responders made attempts to free Vankirk from the vehicle, adding that he was trapped inside. They tell us he died on the scene.
The vehicle’s airbags reportedly deployed, but is not yet known if Vankirk had worn a seatbelt.
The crash is currently under investigation.
