(WXYZ) — With fewer people coming home for the holidays because of the pandemic, some gift-givers and sending a “taste of Michigan” to family and friends.

Companies like Dave’s Sweet Tooth and Mitten Crate have been busy fulfilling orders.

“Busier than we’ve ever been.”

Andrew Chmielewski is the man behind the brands Mitten Crate & Dave’s Sweet Tooth.

Like other small businesses, they didn’t know what to expect due to the shutdown earlier this year.

They turned much of their attention to online orders.

Dave’s Sweet Tooth is all about toffee and they’ve been trying to keep up with the demand.

“Cooking toffee until midnight. We are running a second shift. We are working Saturdays and Sundays.”

Mitten Crate is like a care package with all things Michigan.

Take the “Classic Pack” it has Sanders Chocolates, Better Made chips, and Faygo.

“Sending gifts to loved ones the can’t make it home for the holidays, children that are away at college.”

Andrew says they’ve had to change their crates this year because some of the companies they normally buy from didn’t survive the shutdown.

"Some had gone out of business and we’ve had to replace them with different products.”

The companies are located in Harrison Township and they recently expanded their warehouse.

With holiday orders being processed right now, Andrew is hoping customers will be patient.

“New Year’s gifts this year are going to be the new Christmas gifts.”

Andrew says it’s important to support local businesses while sending loved ones a taste of Michigan.

“The heartbeat of the economy and we just couldn’t be more thankful for all the support.”
