Man critical after being shot in chest at downtown Grand Rapids park

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A man is hospitalized in critical condition and another man is in custody for shooting him in the chest early Sunday morning.

Shortly after midnight, the Grand Rapids Police Department received a call from a man who said that he had just shot another man who had attacked him at Fish Ladder Park, located at 600 Front Avenue NW in downtown Grand Rapids. The caller told police that he was a Concealed Pistol License holder and when the other man assaulted him he fired a gun one time at the attacker.

Upon arriving at the scene, GRPD officers took the 30-year-old caller into custody without incident.

The 27-year-old victim suffered a life-threatening wound to the right side of his chest and was transported by ambulance to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in downtown Grand Rapids where he underwent surgery and was listed in critical condition later Sunday.

The GRPD Major Crimes Team responded to the scene and is investigating the incident.
