GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — There was a heavy police presence on Wealthy Street Wednesday in response to the 19th homicide in Grand Rapids this year.
The shooting happened outside the Wealthy Market, at 1012 Wealthy St. SE, next to Diamond Avenue SE.
Police tell FOX 17 a 23-year-old man was killed just after 2 p.m. He was found in the parking lot.
A suspect called the Grand Rapids Police Department, turned himself in, and is now in custody.
Police are not releasing information about what led up to the shooting as they’re early in their investigation.
GRPD Chief Eric Payne was at the scene earlier and spoke with us about the shooting.
“What happened here, though, today was another senseless killing on the street," Payne said. "This gunfire has to stop. It’s not acceptable. We will do our part. I know — I trust — the community will do their part to work with us. We can’t do it alone.”
There were 18 homicides in Grand Rapids last year.
“We have now surpassed the 2019 total, and we’re only halfway through the year,” Payne said. “This is upsetting to me. Everyone should be upset by this. There is no reason for it. This community deserves better, and we can do better by working together.”
GRPD is speaking with witnesses.
If you have information on the shooting, call the Grand Rapids Police Department at 616-456-3400 or Silent Observer.
