GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The year of new life continues at John Ball Zoo in 2020, with the arrival of three new little ones.
On Friday the zoo announce Wasabi, its female red panda, gave birth to triplets on Thursday.
The young cubs all appear to be healthy. Zookeepers are allowing mom and children to have some time to bond inside the maternity den before performing exams on the new arrivals.
The three are the first offspring for Wasabi. Male red panda Wyatt fathered two cubs in 2016 when he lived at the Chattanooga Zoo. They are the first red pandas ever born at John Ball Zoo.
Red pandas are considered endangered, with less than 2,500 adult red pandas believed to be in the wild.
