GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Although many were dreaming of a white Christmas, we got quite the opposite in West Michigan.

It was the third warmest Christmas on record in Grand Rapids and folks took full advantage of it.

“You always want white on Christmas, no other time, but of course we live in Michigan so you never know,” Diane Kirvan said.

Kirvan was dreaming of a white Christmas, but she’s not disappointed with the 55 degree and sunny consolation prize.

Her and her son cast a couple lines in the river to celebrate.

“We’re out fishing, he got some fishing equipment for Christmas and we thought we’d try it out. It’s great, it’s great fun, especially when you’re an outdoors person, you want to be out and about,” Kirvan added.

Mimi Bartleson and her family have a Christmas tradition of playing hockey.

This year was a little different, they played in t-shirts.

“Our boys came from the south, from Florida and North Carolina and we feel like they brought 4 or 5 days of sun and they might have brought that with them,” Bartleson said.

“Just keep peeling off layers you know, you don’t realize how warm it is till you start moving around and skating,” John Vandervelde. “I think we are dreaming for a white Christmas but this is fun to,” he added.
