IONIA COUNTY, Mich. — A semitruck driver has died after an I-96 crash in Ionia County Wednesday.
Michigan State Police (MSP) says the semi collided with a passenger car near Nash Highway.
We're told the semi approached a traffic backup and failed to slow down, rear-ending the passenger car. The latter was forced into the median.
The semi then hit another semi, which hit a third, troopers explain.
MSP says the first semi driver was thrown from the vehicle and subsequently airlifted in critical condition. They died hours later.
The driver in the passenger car was reportedly hospitalized with minor injuries.
The westbound lanes were closed to traffic but has since reopened.
The crash is still being investigated.
