IONIA COUNTY, Mich. — An Ionia County crash shut down part of I-96 for several hours Thursday afternoon.
The sheriff's office says the crash happened on I-96 West near Hastings Road around 2:45 p.m.
Deputies say the vehicles involved, a car and a pickup truck, were entering a construction zone and approaching a zipper merge to get into the right lane.
They say the driver of the pickup told them they did not realize traffic was slowing down and rear ended a car.
This pushed the car into the safety barriers in the median— the pickup then spun out of control and rear ended another car.
The driver of the pickup and the second car they hit had minor injuries; however, the driver of the first car that got hit was taken to the hospital with what the sheriff's office said was "serious internal injuries."
Investigators say speed appears to be a factor in the crash.
