BOSTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A road construction worker was hospitalized after being struck by a vehicle Friday in Ionia County.

The worker was hit at 9:30 a.m. Friday while picking up barrels in a construction zone on westbound Interstate 96 at mile marker 55 in Boston Township. The investigation revealed that a 36-year-old Clarksville woman was driving a 2019 Toyota Tacoma westbound on I-96 when she swerved trying to avoid the construction zone and then was hit by a 2002 GMC Sierra, which caused the Tacoma to strike both the road worker and a construction vehicle.

The worker — a 23-year-old Wyoming man — was transported to Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids with non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident remains under investigation by the Ionia County Sheriff's Office, which plans to forward the report to the Ionia County Prosecutor's Office for review.

Sheriff's deputies were assisted at the scene by the Michigan State Police Grand Rapids post, the Saranac Fire Department, Rockford Emergency Medical Services and Reed & Hoppes Towing Co.
