LAKE ODESSA, Mich. — A man and his stepson escaped a house fire in Ionia County thanks to the help of some neighbors.

The fire broke out Thursday at a home on Jordan Lake Avenue in Lake Odessa.

A boy and two dogs were able to escape out of a first-floor window, but his stepdad works third shift and was sleeping upstairs.

He was rescued by neighbors who brought a ladder to the window to get him out.

“It was kind of crazy. I was getting ready to head home, go start my wood stove, and I come outside to see the kid jumping out the window with the dogs, automatically, so I call 911, house is on fire and I seen his stepfather up top and automatically I just thought grab a ladder from my parents right here,” said Chaz Arizola, a neighbor.

Thanks to his quick thinking, nobody was hurt in the fire.

“I’m just glad everyone’s all right. Nobody got hurt,” Arizola said. “They can replace the house, can’t replace a family member.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
