IONIA, Mich. — A prisoner is in the hospital, after being shot by a correctional officer at the Michigan Reformatory in Ionia.

A spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Corrections says two fights broke out Sunday morning during yard time.

We're told multiple prisoners were fighting and wouldn't stop, despite several warning shots being fired.

A tower corrections officer ended up shooting the prisoner who was taken to the hospital in unknown condition.

Officials say there were weapons used by prisoners during the fights which are believed to be gang-related.

The prison was supposed to test prisoners for COVID-19 Monday but that is now being postponed.
