KENTWOOD, Mich. — The walk from one of Metro Grand Rapids' major shopping malls a movie theater will be much long once stores open back up. Studio C announced Wednesday that the Celebration Cinema Woodland Mall location is permanently closed.
The company told FOX 17 in a statement that the theater habitually ran at an an operating loss during it's 13 years. In fact, the lease on the property was ending this year, and a company spokesperson says the decision was under consideration for some time.
The Woodland Mall theater showed movies on a delayed release, and small independent films, a model Studio C says is no longer viable.
Employees were informed Wednesday morning about the decision. The theater had been closed during the Stay at Home order since mid-March.
Studio C says independent films will now be shown at Celebration North and Studio Park. The company says low-cost ticket options like T.A.C.O. Tuesday and the Family Film Festival are still available.
