WALKER, Mich. — Candice Breitmayer's life changed in an instant Friday night when she was hit by a driver Walker police chased in a stolen vehicle.
"I don't wish this pain on anyone, not even the kid that stole the car," she said.
As Breitmayer and her boyfriend Larry-David TerHaar, turned at Alpine Avenue and 3 Mile Road, she says they had no time to react.
"He didn't have his headlights on. So we never seen him until he basically at our van," she recalled.
Breitmayer said, "I knew instantly that I was hurt, and then I blacked out and everything's kind of a blur after that until I was in the ambulance."
She says the collision resulted in a broken pelvis and hip. On top of that, it totaled their van which is also the couple’s work van. It's used to carry the carpet they install.
"It's a bum deal. I feel bad that Larry's at work today, and I'm at home," Breitmayer said.
With only PLPD insurance on the van, the family set up a GoFundMe page for help. They're hoping to raise $3,000 to replace it.
"Not working is not an option. We're like many others. We live paycheck to paycheck, and now we have to try to get a new van. But the only way to make money is to work, and that's our way of working," she said.
Walker police say the driver of the stolen vehicle also hit a second vehicle and a pedestrian. We reached out this afternoon for an update on those victims or the suspect, but have not heard back yet.
