KENTWOOD, Mich. — Firefighters are on the scene of a massive fire at a senior living facility in Kentwood.
A spokesperson for the Kentwood Fire Department says all of their available firefighters responded to the fire at American House Kentwood.
The facility's operators say the fire happened while third-party maintenance personnel were working. American House credits its staff for helping evacuate residents, adding people displaced by the fire will be housed at other American House locations nearby.
"American House is deeply saddened by the loss of the homes of our residents and will continue to make their comfort and safety our top priority," the facility writes.
Deputy Fire Chief Michael Hipp estimates the fire started at around 3 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. He says the fire occurred mainly in the attic with no living areas impacted.
We're told 13 people were evacuated. No injuries were reported.
Fire response is expected to continue Thursday night into Friday.
"There's probably 10 fires still inside that building," says Hipp. "They're smaller, but they're still going, and we're having a difficult time accessing them, as well as the safety putting my crews inside there to go get them, so I'm going to assume we'll be here through the night."
A spokesperson for The Red Cross tells us they are ready to help if American House requests it. The Red Cross also says they have teams ready to provide mental health care and spiritual help if needed.
DTE says while natural gas is not believed to have played a factor in the fire, they cut service to the building as a precaution.
