COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. — Firefighters battled a fire in a large garage building at York Creek Apartments in Comstock Park Saturday.
The Kent County Sheriff's Office and Alpine Township Fire Department responded just before 11 a.m. to a report of a fire in the 4000 block of Yorkland Drive NW in Alpine Township. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies discovered flames at the apartment complex, which is located at 650 York Creek Drive NW in Comstock Park.
There were initial calls about strong winds and possibly a lighting strike; however, fire investigators have yet to determine the exact cause of the flames.
People who live in the complex told FOX 17 on scene that the large garage building contained 20 smaller garage stalls— all were destroyed, along with several vehicles inside.
Firefighters were able to limit the flames to just the garage building, and no apartments were involved.
Additionally, there were no injuries reported.
A spokesperson for York Creek Apartments said that four vehicles and some personal property were damaged, that 36 apartments were evacuated as a precaution and that The Rapid provided buses as temporary shelter for affected residents.
Streets were closed to traffic inside the complex while firefighters fought the flames and cleaned up afterward.
